HONORING OUR PAST
INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE
Ankur’s Story
When I was a senior in college, my father collapsed without warning. What followed were the darkest days our family has ever known.
Overnight, I inherited the weight of our entire hotel business, the operations, the debt, and the uncertainty. Like many of you, I know what it feels like to carry a burden you never asked for.
While most of my peers were planning careers and celebrating graduation, I was learning how to keep our family’s livelihood from falling apart. I sat in meetings I wasn’t prepared for. I made decisions I didn’t feel ready to make. And I carried the fear that if I failed, everything my parents had sacrificed to build would disappear.
But I chose to fight.
Over the next several years, I worked alongside my family to stabilize and reposition our portfolio during a period of enormous personal and operational challenges. Recognizing the toll that day-to-day operations placed on my family’s health and quality of life, I helped lead the strategic decision to sell several cash-flowing but operationally intensive properties — a decision that required courage, trust, and a willingness to start over.
Rather than simply maintaining what had been built, I focused on rebuilding with intention.
I shifted toward development and diversification — acquiring land, pursuing mixed-use projects, and expanding into hospitality, self-storage, retail, and restaurant ventures. This transition allowed our family to move from heavy operational burdens toward scalable investments and long-term asset growth — creating greater flexibility, security, and freedom for the next generation.
Through this journey, I experienced firsthand the challenges that so many young professionals in AAHOA face every day:
Unexpected responsibility. Pressure to preserve a family legacy. Navigating generational transitions. Balancing operations with investment growth. And building financial independence while honoring our parents’ sacrifices.
These experiences didn’t just shape my career. They shaped my purpose.
Today, I’m running for Young Professionals Eastern Division Director because I believe the next generation deserves more than survival. We deserve the resources, mentorship, and education to build something greater than what we inherited — not in spite of our parents’ sacrifice, but because of it.
The first generation built the foundation. It is now our responsibility to build the future.
Ankur’s Platform
Our parents built empires from nothing. They worked 18-hour days, slept in lobbies, and sacrificed everything so we could have opportunity. That foundation is sacred — and it’s our job to protect it, grow it, and build on it.
But the hospitality industry is evolving. And the next generation of AAHOA members needs more than operational know-how to succeed. We need leadership training, investment education, mentorship, and the freedom to define our own paths.
That’s what this platform is about.
Second-Generation Leadership & Transition
Many of us stepped into the family business out of duty, not by design. This pillar is about helping young professionals transition from operators to owners — with confidence, clarity, and support.
- Education on transitioning from family operations into ownership roles
- Guidance for succession planning conversations with parents
- Workshops on leadership identity, decision-making authority, and building your own voice within the family business
Diversification & Wealth Creation
The first generation built wealth through hotels. The next generation must learn to protect it and grow it — beyond a single asset class. This is one of the biggest challenges facing second-generation owners, and it’s one I’ve lived through personally.
- Education on SBA lending, private equity, joint ventures, and syndication
- Development pipeline insights for young owners ready to scale
- Tools and strategies to grow from 1–2 properties into scalable portfolios
- Real estate diversification beyond hotels — including self-storage, retail, mixed-use, and alternative investments
- Risk management and liquidity strategies for long-term wealth preservation across generations
Mentorship Network
No one should have to figure this out alone. Too many young professionals feel isolated in daily operations with no roadmap for growth. This pillar creates structured connections between emerging leaders and established owners who’ve already walked the path.
- Structured mentorship pairing young professionals with multi-property owners
- Development mentors and finance mentors for targeted guidance
- Asset management education — learning to think like an investor, not just an operator
- Training on hiring leadership teams, building financial literacy for ownership decisions, and creating time-freedom strategies so you can lead your business instead of being trapped inside it
Career Flexibility for the Next Generation
Here’s a truth no one talks about enough: not every child of a hotel owner wants to operate a hotel full-time. And that’s okay. This pillar is about giving the next generation permission and pathways to contribute in the way that fits them best.
- Advocacy for roles beyond operations — including development, finance, and acquisitions
- Entrepreneurship support for those building outside of hospitality
- Leadership paths inside and outside the industry that honor the family’s investment while allowing personal growth
